Sizing guide

What size projector screen do you actually need?

Match your room's back-row viewing distance to a screen size, then pick a fabric — here's the short version.

The rule of thumb

For text-heavy content like slides or spreadsheets, your furthest viewer shouldn't sit more than about six times the screen's height away — for video, that stretches to roughly eight times. Measure the distance from the screen to your back row, divide by six, and that's roughly the minimum screen height you need.

Room size to screen size

As a starting point for a standard 4:3 or 16:9 room setup, see the table alongside.

Fabric matters as much as size

  • Matte white — the standard choice; even brightness across a wide viewing angle, works well in most rooms
  • High-gain — reflects more light back toward the centre, brighter in the middle but dims off to the sides — good for narrow rooms
  • Grey / ambient-light-rejecting — improves contrast when you can't fully dim the room, at some cost to peak brightness

Screen or wall?

A plain light-coloured wall is a legitimate substitute for a casual presentation or movie night. For anything client-facing, or a room wider than it is deep, a proper screen keeps brightness and colour consistent edge to edge.
